MAIN PROPULSION DIESEL GENERATOR SETS WITH ACOUSTIC ENCLOSURE AND DOUBLE RESILIENT MOUNTING FOR LOW NOISE APPLICATION

For the main propulsion generator sets of the oceanographic research vessel Alliance, in order to meet the requirements of the "acoustic budget" of that vessel, Fincantieri-Divisione Grandi Motori (GMT) has made theoretical and experimental studies of all the possible noise control measures to be applied to the noise transmission paths. It was soon established that acceptable noise levels could be met only by means of double resilient mounts for the diesel generator set together with a high-quality acoustic enclosure fitted independently to the raft. The paper outlines the design and testing procedures employed during the development of the mounting and the enclosure. Preliminary test results indicated that the structure-borne noise levels were acceptable throughout the whole frequency range except for the octave bands of 31.5 and 63Hz. Following a number of modifications to the generator-set a high attenuation capability of both airborne and structure-borne noise was achieved.
