JOINT PROGRAM IN TRANSPORTATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM-JPTRS
This progress report describes a manual bibliographic retrieval system for transportation research information (JPTRS), developed by the University of Toronto - York University Joint Program in Transportation Information Services. The JPTRS design combines both a classification system based on a faceted analysis of transportation research, and a controlled vocabulary of keywords. Operation of the system depends on the coordination of uniterm cards. This report states the objectives of the Information Services and the rationale behind the design of the retrieval language, describes the system's operation and the results of evaluations of the indexing subsystems, user-system interface and the acquisition policy. It concludes with recommendations for further development. Included as appendices are the classification codes and definitions, the Indexing 22.2 Userbook, the Searching worksheets for the indexing subsystem test, the user questionnaire and a bibliography.
