SAILOR'S NIGHTMARE: THE SHIP-TO-SHIP MISSILE
The Western navies have nine types of ship-to-ship missiles (SSMs) in service or under development; each of these is here described and illustrated. The nine are: Tomahawk, made by General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas of USA; Harpoon, made by McDonnell Douglas; Exocet, made by Aerospatiale of France; Otomat/Teseo, made by OTO-Melara of Italy and Engins Matra of France; Penguin, made by Kongsberg of Norway; RBS 15, made by Saab of Sweden; Gabriel, made in Israel (a Gabriel made under licence in S. Africa is known as Skorpjoen); Sea Skua, made by British Aerospace; and ANS, which is under development by MBB of W. Germany and Aerospatiale. A list is included of over 50 non-Warsaw Pact nations, with their types of ship-to-ship missiles. The article also includes brief information on the Soviet Navy's seven main SSMs; these are the SS-N-2 (Styx), the SS-N-3 (Shaddock), and the SS-N-7, -9, -12, -19, and -21. See also Abstracts No. 71,221 and 71,222 (Apr. 1987).
