AN ALLEN HEAVY-FUEL PROPULSION ENGINE - THE FIRST 25,000 HOURS [IN ESSO PLYMOUTH]

Esso Plymouth, a 2190dwt products tanker, was described in the article covered by Abstract No. 54,686 (Jan. 1981). The present article describes the vessel and in particular her 2250 bhp/750 rpm Allen 6S37 main engine, and gives an account of the first 25,000 hr of engine operation. During this period, the engine, which runs on heavy fuel, was given a new type of piston-ring pack and new pistons (at 13,000 hr) and several other improvements were made. The current version of the Allen 6S37 is offered for use with fuels of up to 85cSt/80deg.C at a continuous rating of 2500 bhp (see also Abstract No. 68,531, June 1986).
