HIGH SOLIDS/WATER BASED COATINGS

New clean air regulations may limit the permissible solvent contents of paints. There are two possible solutions: to reduce the volatile solvent content by formulating high solids coatings, or to utilise water-based paints. High solids coatings have advantages in many applications, but cannot be used where thin film thicknesses are required. Water based coatings meet all clean air regulations and eliminate any danger of fire or explosion during application or storage, but there are limitations on the temperature at which they can be stored, stringent humidity control us necessary during application, rust will bleed through them, they are sensitive to trace oil contamination, and are more expensive and have lower solids contents than their solvent-based counterparts.
