PERCEPTION-RELATED SURVEY FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES: A PILOT STUDY IN SUNDERLAND

The purpose of the major investigation (of which this report forms a pilot study), was to explore techniques developed under the broad heading of "perception studies", and to test their suitability in the local government planning context. Chapter 1 gives a background to the study, including details of the form of the McKinsey & Co. enquiry in Sunderland, and the urban context within which this study was conducted. In Chapter 2, a brief historical background of Sunderland is given, followed by details of survey design and an outline of the questionnaire form. Tabulated responses and comments concerning questions in the survey are contained in Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 tabulates responses to questions concerning wider, less easily defined aspects of Sunderland's image, rather than the more locally based and readily defined. Chapter 5 contains examples of comments and reactions to photographic images of Sunderland, as an aid to discussion in the interview situation. Chapter 6 discusses attitudes of people to their immediate living environment, using Doxford Park Estate as an example. Chapter 7 deals with attitudes towards levels of influence in local policy and activities, and a summary of the conclusions is contained in Chapter 8. /TRRL/
