COMPUTERISE, CENTRALISE AND RATIONALISE [PROBO BIAKH AND NORASIA SAMANTHA]

Two "future" ships are described and discussed with particular reference to their high levels of automation and integrated monitoring and control systems. They are the 49,000dwt Korean built Norwegian products/bulk/oil carrier Probo Biakh (see Abstract No. 66,667, Nov. 1985) and the 27,800dwt West German containership Norasia Samantha (see Abstracts No. 68,195, and 68,196, May 1986; 69,957, Apr. 1986; and 67,680, Mar. 1986). The training of personnel to meet the reduced-manning requirements of such ships is also briefly discussed. An accompanying article [1 p.] summarises the "efficient ship" activities in recent years in the Netherlands, France, West Germany, Norway, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
