EFFECTS OF REDUCED SPEED LIMITS ON TOTAL PETROL CONSUMPTION IN SWEDEN
INVERKAN AV SAENKTA HASTIGHETSGRAENSER PAA LANDETS TOTALA BENSINFOERBRUKNING
The aim of this investigation was to make a prognosis of the total decrease in petrol consumption due to reduced speed limits in the rural road network. Estimates were made for the following reductions in speed limits (March 1975): from 110 to 90 km/h, from 110 to 90 and from 90 to 70 km/h, and from 110 and 90 to 70 km/h. The following information was required for the estimations: the distribution of vehicle mileage on different speed limits, the distribution of vehicle mileage on different speeds before and after the lowering of the speed limits, the relationships between speed and average petrol consumption, and the variation of vehicle mileage over the year. The petrol saving for different reductions of the speed limits is estimated in percent of the total consumption in the country during 1973 (4.2 million M3), and is found to be 0,5 to 4,5%, depending on kind of speed reduction and on the observance of the speed laws. The petrol saving in percent of the petrol consumption in the road network studied is about 3.5 times higher. /TRRL/
