A PILOT INTERVIEW STUDY CONCERNING YELLOW FLASHING LIGHTS IN ROAD TRAFFIC

As a pilot study to an investigation of yellow flashing lights in road traffic 150 interviews were made in connection with existing flasher installations. The results indicate that knowledge about the general meaning 'caution' is fairly good, but that knowledge about, and interpretation of, more specific flashing signal situations is considerably worse. As a follow up to the interview two further studies are suggested. One is a field-study of possible behavioral effects of the reported "cautiousness", the other is a more comprehensive interview-study of knowledge and attitudes about flashing signals. Furthermore a separate study of attention factors in connection with flashing lights is suggested. /TRRL/
