VEHICLE AND SAFETY DEVICE FOR SAME

This patent specification concerns a vehicle safety device consisting of an occupant-restraining belt, one end of which is supported on a vehicle door so that the belt automatically fits around an occupant as the door is closed. Other provisions include: tensioning means for the belt to hold the belt in an occupant-restraining position but unlocked during normal running motion of the vehicle; a locking device responsive in use to the onset of a rapid deceleration of the vehicle and operable to lock the belt in its occupant-restraining position; a check device operable to inhibit the tensioning means so as to permit the belt to go slack, and triggering means responsive in use to a vehicle condition associated with low vehicle accident risk, for instance the open state of a door of the vehicle or the "off" state of the vehicle ignition, and operable to actuate the check device so that the tensioning means are inhibited when this condition exists. The tensioning means are of non-electric type and include a spring device which winds in the belt on a reel. /TRRL/
