BITUMINOUS DRIVEWAYS
This note discusses the design criteria and construction of bituminous driveways which must be capable of distributing the concentrated weight applied by a vehicle tyre over a sufficient area of the in-situ foundation soil to enable that soil to support the weight. In domestic driveway construction the necessary thickness of construction is such that sub-division into a base and sub-base is not necessary. The recommended design procedures are based on an empirical method and the relationship between California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and the thickness of pavement required for domestic driveway traffic is given together with the CBR values for the most common soil types and moisture conditions. Methods of site preparation are described: excavation, soil stabilization and compaction of the sub-grade. Suitable materials for the basecourse, if required, are graded crushed stone and natural graded gravel and compaction techniques are again summarized. The types of bituminous materials used to surface driveways are listed and their application described. When certain types of bituminous surfacing are used, the prepared base must first be primed by spraying its surface with a thin film of priming tar or a proprietary priming mixture.
