REPORT ON AN ENQUIRY IN A SCANDINAVIAN SHIPOWNING COMPANY REGARDING FAULT STATISTICS AND FAULT CORRECTIONS BY THE CREW

The enquiries related to a pair of 75,300 dwt multipurpose ships delivered in 1981 and 1983. The answers to a questionnaire regarding the operation of the machinery automation system that was submitted to the owners are analysed. In general it is concluded that shipboard repair and correction of faults was in some cases limited by inadequate documentation and the absence of the appropriate spare parts. The electrical officers on the two ships both had long experience of the type of equipment and had undergone courses, so that was not a factor in this case. Peripheral equipment often proved to be the primary cause of a failure, and its improvement and proper selection is important.
