MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF HYDRODYNAMICS OF ROV'S TETHER CABLE

The hydrodynamic drag force on the tether cable is a major limitation to the use of an ROV in ocean currents. This paper describes a new method for measuring the motion and hydrodynamics of the tether cable by an acoustic positioning system. Results from a test using an ROV with transponders attached to the tether cable at appropriate intervals are compared with a theoretical analysis, from which it is concluded that the normal drag coefficient for the tether cable is much higher than the theoretical value of 1.2.
