THE CONSEQUENCES OF A REDUCTION OF MAXIMUM VEHICLE LENGTH ON TRANSPORT ECONOMY
TRANSPORTEKONOMISKA KONSEKVENSER AV MINSKAD HOEGSTA TILLAATEN FORDONSLAENGD
As a result of the proposal of the 1975 traffic policy commission to the effect that the maximum length of vehicle combinations be reduced from 24M to 18M, the transport research delegation has carried out a study of the consequences of this reduction. Owing to the shortage of time, the problem could not be examined in depth. It was found that: 1. The maximum gross weight would be cut from 51.4 to 44.8 tons, there being no decrease on reduction to 22M; 2. Greatest reduction in load capacity would occur in container carriers where load would be cut from 36 to 24 tons if containers are to be loaded equally; 3. Lorry and trailer combinations 24M long need no greater space in curves than 18M articulated vehicles; 4. The risk of overturning of 24M combinations during high speed manoeuvres is somewhat less than that of similar 18M combinations. Annual rises in transport costs due to a reduction to 18M would be 10%, and due to a reduction to 22M, 2%. /TRRL/
