EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON COUPLED MOTIONS OF SHIP AND TANK LIQUID IN WAVES

An experimental study has been performed into the dynamic effect of tank free surfaces on the motion of a ship in waves. Experimental data were obtained on anti-rolling tanks, slack loaded tanks of a liquefied gas carrier, spherical and rectangular tanks, and cargo holds partially filled with sea water. A motion prediction method was developed for a ship equipped with multiple U-tanks, and its accuracy was confirmed by the experiments on anti-rolling tanks. This U-tank approximation was then applied to a spherical tank and a rectangular tank, and reasonable agreement with the experimental results was again obtained. In the case of slack loaded tanks in a liquefied gas carrier it was found that the rolling motion is increased at frequencies near the natural period of the tank by the free surface effects.
