LIGHTWEIGHT GMT ENGINE FOR SUBMARINES

A brief description is given of the Grandi Motori Trieste lightweight four-stroke A210SM engine, which is a supercharged version of the GMT 210M naturally-aspirated engine already employed in Italian submarines. An 8-cyl, vee-form A210SM engine developing 785 kW at 1500 rpm weighs only 6.6 tonnes, and emphasis has been placed on anti-shock and anti-vibration characteristics. Performance curves for a 16-cyl. engine show a fuel consumption of about 180g /bhph at a maximum power output of 2140 bhp.
