THE EFFECT ON ACCIDENTS AND SPEEDS OF THE 30 KM/H SPEED LIMIT IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
EFFEKTER PAA OLYACKOR OCH HASTIGHETER AV HASTIGHETSGRAENSEN 30 RM/H 1 BOSTADSOMRAADEN
Speed observations were carried out at eight spots in three residential areas in Stockholm. The investigation was carried out as a before and after study in connection with the introduction of the 30 km/h speed limit. Decreased speed was observed in general, and mainly attributed to the changed speed limit. It has also shown that the changed speed limit (from 50 to 30 km/h) caused a decreased observance of the existing speed limits. Concerning the influence on accidents, no conclusion can be drawn as regards the change in the number of accidents after the 30 km/h limit was introduced. Nor can any conclussion be drawn as regards any change in accident severity. /TRRL/
