TEST RESULTS FROM GMT'S BL550 ENGINE

Grandi Motori Trieste are currently testing a new long-stroke four-stroke engine. The new BL550 will cover powers from 9900 bhp to 33000 bhp from a cylinder output of 1650 bhp at up to 450 rpm. The engine, which is a further development of the GMT 550-mm bore four-stroke engines introduced in 1970, is designed and equipped to burn heavy fuel oil. To increase the cylinder output the stroke has been increased to 630 mm; the consequent increase in stroke-bore ratio has enabled the compression ratio to be raised without excess shallowing of the combustion chamber, and as a result of this and the adoption of an improved pulse-charging system the fuel consumption is expected to be 124 g/bhph. The higher mechanical and thermal loads involved in the new engine have required some redesign of the hot parts, such as cylinder heads and cylinder liners, and the crankgear components, but in the main the engine retains the proven design features of the original GMT 550 mm bore engine from which it has been derived.
