USE OF A FILLET WELDING ROBOT FOR DOUBLE-BOTTOM COMPONENTS IN SHIPBUILDING

A double-bottom production line at the Volkswerft Stralsund has been equipped with three fillet welding robots. These are used for attaching flanges in the cutouts of floors and intercostals and also stiffeners. The robots concerned are of the portal type. They are flexible in operation and can deal with double-bottom components up to 9.5 m x 1.5 m in size. The portals can traverse over a pair of welding tables, on one of which the next unit is assembled while the first unit is being welded on the other table. The programs to be followed are stored on magnetic tape, with the operator reading in the appropriate program and starting the welding process before laying up the next unit. The time taken to assemble and prepare a unit for welding is about 85% of the actual welding time, so that the operator is not overloaded.
