NIGERIAN PATROL BOATS
The demand for faster patrol-boats has led Van Mill, the Dutch boatbuilders, to develop a new design with an aluminium hull, instead of the steel-hulled craft that the yard has been building for many years. The article gives a brief account of the development of the new design and describes the boat, known as the P20, six of which have been ordered for the Nigerian Navy. The hull has deep V sections forward which flatten out to give a good planing surface; a pronounced chine is extended forward and helps to keep the spray down at high speeds. The superstructure, also of aluminium, is flexibly mounted. There are two engine-compartments, offering a choice of engine options. The prototype, and the first two boats for Nigeria, have three GM 700-hp V12 Diesels; the wing engines, in the after compartment, drive through V-drive gearboxes, and the centre engine, in the forward compartment, drives through a conventional arrangement and can be used alone when loitering. An alternative version has two MTU 1100-hp Diesels. The top speed of both versions is 32.5 knots; the hull is designed for a total engine-power up to 2700 hp. The wheelhouse has a three-seat arrangement, with the helmsman flanked by the engineer and the navigaor; there are also wheel and engine controls on the flying bridge. Twin semi-balanced rudders are fitted. A 20-mm gun is mounted forward, and twin machine-guns can be mounted on the flying bridge. Principal particulars: length 21 m o.a., 18 m w/1; beam 5.5 m o.a.; depth 2.87 m; draught (aft) 1.75 m at 40 t displacement; single-engine range at 11 knots, using max. fuel capacity of 12 cu m, 1200 miles; three-engine range, at 25 knots, 950 miles; accommodation in cabins aft for two officers, and in two 2-berth and one 8-berth cabins below decks for P.O's and other ratings.
