POWERING A VERSATILE OFFSHORE SERVICE VESSEL >GULF SERVICE<

The 68-m Gulf Service, an offshore multipurpose (anchor handling tug/supply) service vessel designed for operating in severe environments is now in service with the Zapata Gulf Marine Corporation. She was built by a Zapata subsidiary, Quality Shipyards, of Houma, La. The article describes her machinery installation. The four main engines, Stork Werkspoor SWD 280 units, are mounted in two father-and-son arrangements, one port and one starboard, each consisting of an 8-cylinder and a 6-cylinder engine driving a Berg c.p. propeller through a Reintjes twin-input single-output gearbox. One father-and-son pair is reverse-mounted so that the propeller drive is taken from what would normally be the forward end. The engines, which can run on poor-grade heavy fuels, are rated at 325 kW/cylinder; total output is about 8950 kW. The two 6-cylinder engines provide power for normal cruising and maximum economy, the two 8-cylinder engines provide power for maximum speed, and all four are used to give maximum bollard-pull for towing; fuel is thus saved, as the vessel operates in the cruising mode for about 80% of the time, and less maintenance is required. Engine speed and loading, and propeller pitch, are controlled by a Regulateurs Europa system; the article includes brief information on this and on other engine-room equipment. An engine-room plan, and a general-arrangement plan showing the vessel's tank arrangements for fuel, mud, etc., are also included.
