CAR FERRIES CONVERSION: A SPECIAL ORDER FOR A BELGIAN YARD

Boelwerf, Hoboken, have recently jumboised the car ferries Prinses Maria Esmeralda and Princesse Marie-Christine by raising the superstructure to add a new 5 m high garage deck. A new stem with a bow bulb has been fitted, as have sponsons to increase stability. The drydock employed was first modified by building pillars, that would support the upper part of the superstructure, at the sides. The ship then entered dock, and after inclining tests to determine the exact weight and c of g of the existing ship the dock was drained down and the horizontal cut made. The dock was then flooded to raise the ship to a level where the upper part of the superstructure could be rested (by means of outriggers) on the columns, and when the dock was again drained the two parts of the ship separated. This operation was repeated, with temporary struts between the main hull and the superstructure, to obtain the required height difference; then the ship was moved back in the dock, the new garage deck and the sponsons were fitted, and finally the ship was floated forwards in the dock until the superstructure plumbed the hull again and could be welded to it.
