ON STRUCTURAL SAFETY OF SHIPS FOLLOWING FLOODING

Some common characteristics in a number of recent serious accidents which caused the loss of ships are identified; it is considered that a structural failure may have been the main or the concomitant cause of these casualties. In order to verify this possibility, with particular attention to ships carrying heavy goods and therefore prone to a high degree of permeability of the holds, and taking into consideration the stress levels following flooding, have been examined. It was found that in some cases flooding may cause the loss of a ship even if the subdivision calculations show the residual buoyancy to be sufficient. A rapid calculation method for the determination of the quantity of water that may invade each space of a ship is given.
