The report describes an attempt to isolate the contribution of the forebody of a ship to the wave resistance. Although the net resistance of the forebody of a surface ship model is successfully evaluated, it is found that the component of pressure drag due to the local free-surface disturbance is a large fraction of the total and that, consequently, the resistance associated with propagated waves cannot be separated experimentally. A comparison of theoretically computed and experimentally evaluated wave-making resistance, for a case in which viscous boundary-layer influences do not play an important role, cannot be carried out under this procedure. A brief discussion of other experiments conducted to evaluate forebody drag is included. Mention is made of other recent efforts to correlate experimental pressure measurements with theoretical results. /Author/
