PETRO BULK CARRIERS AND LPG/NH3/VCM CARRIERS FROM BOELWERF

The Boelwerf Yard in Belgium has recently concentrated on the construction of products and gas tankers, and a series of 45,300 dtw products tankers that are able to carry all kinds of petroleum products including all IMO Class III products, as well as methanol, fatty acids, and caustic soda, and that are also capable of carrying grain in bulk, is first briefly described; the vessels concerned are the Jahre Lion, Naess Leopard, Naess Panther, and Jahre Tiger with principal particulars: Length oa/bp 171.80/164.00 m; Breadth 32.24 m; Depth 17.90 m; Draught, design/scantling 11.50/13.30 m; Deadweights, corresponding 37,500/45,300 t. A description is then given of the 25,000 cu m LPG/NH3/VCM carrier Gent. This vessel is equipped with the BIS-Boelwerf insulation system that has been specially designed for gas carriers. In this prefabricated aluminium-covered polyurethane panels of handy sizes are fitted to the outside of the cargo tanks by means of studs and specially-designed insulating polyethylene tubes. Gaps of about 10 mm between adjacent panels, filled with soft foam or low-density polyurethane and covered by self-adhesive tape, allow for contractions of the tank. Principal particulars of this ship are: Length oa/bp 155.40/147.00 m; Breadth 26.50 m; Depth 16.20 m; Draught/Deadweight (propane) 9.10m/17,642 t, (VCM) 11.70m/28,680t.
