MATCHING THE MAIN MACHINERY TO THE PROPELLER FROM THE STAND-POINT OF ENERGY-SAVING
This paper introduces a method for the selection of main machinery based on the precept of "matching hull to engines", for a given ship at a given speed, and for calculating fuel consumption of main machinery. In different types of ships the power needed to maintain constant speed varies with different optimum rpm propeller design. The most economical and feasible matching point between the engine and the propeller in a constant ship-speed curve is discussed in tandem with the effect of the magnitude of power margin on energy-saving in a chosen main engine/propeller combination.
