ON MOTIONS OF A PILOT BOAT IN THE VICINITY OF A LARGE SHIP

Motions of a pilot boat in the vicinity of a large ship are investigated with the object of designing a stable pilot platform in order to minimise the risk to pilots when boarding or disembarking from large ships in rough seas. A theoretical method of predicting the motions is derived; this shows good agreement with the results of model tests. Applying this method to a typical pilot boat it is found that the heaving amplitude is very large over a wide range of frequency; that swaying not only brings the boat into contact with the ship but causes them to drift apart; and that rolling amplitude is large at the resonant frequency.
