UNDERSTANDING THE EFFECT OF ATIS ON COMMUTERS' ROUTE CHOICE DECISIONS

This paper investigates commuters' route choice behavior in the presence of traffic information. Data used in the study are collected from two waves of computer-aided telephone interviews targeting the morning commuters in the Los Angeles area. Several statistical modeling techniques are employed to investigate factors that influence commuters' acquisition of en route and pre-trip traffic information, their frequency of changing routes based on en route and pre-trip traffic information, and the potential impact of information on route choice decisions in case of incident related congestion. The estimation results provide valuable insight into the effect of traffic information and information accuracy, together with several commute characteristics and socioeconomic factors on route choice and route changing.
