AN EVALUATION OF BOND PULLOUT TESTS AND THEIR RELEVANCE TO STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE

Pullout test specimens are widely used in the assessment of bond performance of reinforcement. However, there are objections to the form of such tests, particularly where ribbed bars are concerned, as the failure mode in pullout tests is very different from that in practical circumstances and failure strengths are considerably higher than design values. This paper reports a study undertaken to establish whether pullout tests in general, and the BS 4449 bond test in particular, provide a valid measure of bond performance of deformed bars. It is concluded that there are no strong reasons to abandon pullout methods of test, despite their being unrepresentative of practical conditions. However, there is a need to develop correlations between performance in Standard bond tests and performance in structural elements, and to set performance criteria for pullout tests consistent with these correlations. A suitable correlation between performance in the BS 4449 bond test and BS 8110 design ultimate bond strengths is proposed, and the need to develop a similar correlation in respect of crack and deflection control performance is identified.
