THE USE OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN TRAFFIC EDUCATION

This article discusses the scope for using educational television and radio, together with computers and video cassette recorders, for traffic education in South Africa. These media can be used to educate a wide range of people, from illiterates to university students. A proper strategy and effective evaluation systems are needed for these media. Broadcast programmes should be integrated systematically in the overall development strategy. The aim should be not to replace teachers but to improve the education's subject coverage and quality. The programmes should be developed by specialist teachers collaborating with media specialists. If properly managed, the extensive use of radio and audio cassettes would considerably alleviate problems due to the shortage of teachers trained in traffic education. Programmes should be integrated with normal teaching, and provide children with the knowledge and know-how to establish safe traffic actions for life. Out-of-school safety training and education for workers is also important. Traffic education programmes could be established at community centres throughout South Africa. Electronic media could more rapidly fulfil the urgent need for transport-related training in many areas.
