THE CAP PROJECT, 1993

KEPSPROJEKTET 1993

Traffic is one of the most common causes of children's insecurity. Children have neither the physical nor the mental equipment to cope with a complex traffic environment before they are 12, and their safety is therefore the responsibility of adults. In the autumn of 1993, all six year olds starting school in Stockholm were given a bright green peaked cap. These were worn much longer than expected. The aim of the project was to make traffic aware of the large number of new schoolchildren. Other steps were also taken to enhance children's traffic safety. An evaluation shows that the goal of initiating a debate and calling attention to children's traffic safety has been achieved. Children have become more aware that they are part of traffic. Some people think there is a risk that children may believe the caps will protect them.
