USING NEW TRANSIT TECHNOLOGY TO SHAPE SUBURBAN GROWTH
This paper shows how automated guideway transit (AGT) could be used to shape urban development patterns in the outer portions of urban areas where most of the growth is likely to take place between now (1975) and the year 2000. The paper raises a very important question: Should AGT be used primarily to shape urban development patterns at the fringe of our metropolitan areas? Or should it be used to serve existing patterns of development and travel demand in the central city? It was noted that the proposed policy of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) on major capital investments does not include the use of transit to shape urban growth patterns. The public acceptance question is another key issue that is closely related to the land use issue.
