TRUCK NOISE IV-F: AN ECONOMIC STUDY OF REDUCING THE EXTERIOR NOISE LEVEL ON THE INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER QUIETED TRUCK
This report discusses the economics of reducing the noise emissions of a typical, heavy duty, diesel truck used in linehaul operation. During this economic study, consideration was given to the change in the initial cost to the customer at the time of purchase, the change in maintenance cost due to parts and labor, the change in operating cost due to fuel consumption and the change in revenue earning capability of the truck. To reduce the noise from the original level of 88dB(A) down to a level of 80 - 81dB(A), the change in initial cost would be about $70/dB(A). Below 80 - 81dB(A), the engine will require extensive treatment and the added initial cost would increase to $550/dB(A). These costs are based on 1972 economic levels. The overall economic impact of noise reduction, however, is better represented by the total long range cost of operating the truck. Future efforts to improve the cost effectiveness of truck noise control should concentrate on improved ways of reducing engine noise.
