ASSESSMENT OF DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF RAIL PADS
The main function of the resilient rail pad between rail and sleeper surface is to attenuate the high dynamic forces, induced by wheel/rail interaction. To determine the dynamic properties of rail pads, an efficient test method was developed earlier by the Road and Railroad Research Laboratory of Delft University of Technology (DUT) based on impact-load testing with simple but efficient means. Recently, a new curve-fitting method was introduced leading to better estimates of the stiffness and damping of rail pads. This article deals with the test principle and the data manipulation involved and presents some interesting results.
