ADVANCED ROAD TRAFFIC TECHNOLOGY IN JAPAN AND ITS FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
This paper reviews Japanese activities in advanced road transport technologies. CACS (Comprehensive Automobile Traffic Control System), begun in 1973, was an in-vehicle dynamic road guidance system using two-way vehicle-road communication. RACS (Road/Automobile Communication System), begun in 1984, was an in-car information system for navigation and route guidance. AMTICS (Advanced Mobile Traffic Information and Communication System), begun in 1987, extended the work of RACS. ARTS (Advanced Road Traffic Systems), begun in 1989, broadens RACS to other areas of intelligent transport systems. SSVS (Super Smart Vehicle System), begun in 1990, seeks safety and road traffic efficiency. ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle), begun in 1991, aims to develop autonomous on-board vehicle safety features. UTMS (Universal Traffic Management Systems), begun in 1993, promotes research and development (R & D) and international liaison. VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) conducted a large-scale demonstration experiment in Tokyo in 1993. VERTIS (VEhicle Road and Traffic Intelligence Society) was founded in 1994 to promote effective R & D. There has also been a feasibility study of an underground urban freight transport network.
