URBAN REGENERATION AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE

With careful investigation, preplanning, and consultation at the initiation of urban-regeneration schemes, it is possible to identify possible problems in relation to transportation, contaminated land, and local antagonism. The City of London has instituted a "Considerate Contractors" scheme that aims to ensure that contractors, by following a code of good practice, with regard to prevention of nuisance from noise, dust, and construction traffic, facilitate the implementation of regeneration projects without antagonizing existing inhabitants. This requires, in some cases, working in a way that is not always the most economic. This essay stresses the importance of safety on construction sites as well as tidiness upon completion. The use of a "Considerate Contractors" scheme is suggested for regeneration programs.
