THE CASE FOR COMPACT POWER
A paramount advantage of electing compact new-technology power stations for light-rail and specialty electric vehicle systems instead of reduced versions of heavy-rail stations is a dramatic cost reduction. For example, an optimized 500 KW substation could be provided for as little as $100,000. Compared to a reduced version of a heavy-rail station, the same function can cost up to $750,000, not to mention the additional civil cost of added features. Time savings are another big factor. Properly designed compact units can be produced and put into operation in as little as four months.
