UTAH USES SBR-MODIFIED ASPHALT TO MEET NEW SHRP SPECIFICATIONS
One of the first large-scale non-test applications of polymer-modified asphalt is Interstate 70 in Utah. The Utah Department of Transportation is aggressively implementing new products, particularly those which meet Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) specifications. This article reports on Utah's previous use of polymer-modified asphalts and notes that modified asphalts are suited to Utah's long frigid winters and extreme summer heat. Utah officials expect greater resistance to longitudinal rutting, transverse cracking, and water susceptibility.
