BESSES O'TH' BARN BRIDGE: INSPECTION AND TESTING OF A SEGMENTAL POST- TENSIONED CONCRETE BRIDGE
Concern over the integrity of bridges using segmental post-tensioned construction was heightened by the sudden collapse of Ynys-y-Gwas Bridge in 1985. In 1993, the Department of Transport issued Departmental Advice Note BA 50/93 addressing the requirements for the inspection of post-tensioned bridges. While the majority of the work described in this paper preceded the publication of BA 50/93, it is shown that the work which has been carried out has essentially followed the recommended principles. This paper describes the findings of the inspection and testing programme which has been carried out on Besses O'Th' Barn Bridge since 1989, and illustrates some of the unusual aspects of this work.
