LOW FRICTION HULL COATINGS FOR ICEBREAKERS. PHASE II, PART III. ANALYSIS OF ICEBREAKING IN PARTICULATE ICE
In this portion of the Low Friction Hull Coatings project (Part III of Phase II), the resistance of ships moving through particulate (slush or mush) ice was studied. The purpose was to better understand the effect of friction in icebreaking. A mathematical model was derived for drag in ice concentrations less than 50%. Laboratory model tests were performed for concentrations greater than 50% in order to better understand the problem. A math model for resistance in high concentration ice was started but additional analytical and ice property research is needed to derive meaningful results. (Author)
