ITS TECHNOLOGIES HERALD NEW ERA IN PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are a variety of advanced technologies that employ computers, electronics, and communications to smooth traffic flow, ease congestion, improve the environment, and increase road capacity and safety. This article discusses the future of ITS technologies and describes some of the "smart" transportation projects popping up in major cities across the United States. Major corporations are involved in the ITS movement and now the challenge is educating the public in ITS technology use. A sidebar describes the development of the national ITS architecture.
