THE NEED FOR STRATEGIC INFORMATION IN AN ADVANCED TRANSPORT TELEMATICS FRAMEWORK - CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE SCOPE PROJECT
This paper describes the importance of a Strategic Information System (SIS) as a data integration agent in the Advanced Transport Telematics framework. It outlines demands of the different user groups and the corresponding overall data model. The need for strategic information for planning as well as for traveller and traffic information is pointed out. A novel development in the direct integration of location references via a Geographic Information System (GIS) is discussed. Future prospects concern the integration of an environmental information system into the traffic control system. Brief details of the system architecture and design of: a) the Cologne GIS and SIS; and b) Southampton Travel and Transport Information Centre (TTIC) are provided.
