CHANGING FROM OIL TO COAL FIRING
This article is based on a recent paper "Retrofitting for Coal Burning Propulsion Plants" by J. R. Burns <Foster Wheeler Boiler Corporation> and R. W. Smith <General Electric Company <USA>>. According to the authors, substantial reductions in fuel cost can be made by converting existing steam ships to burn coal coupled with improvements to the thermal efficiency of the steam cycle. The ships can be modified to burn coal by any of the following three means:-- 1. Converting existing boilers to coal firing. 2. Replacing one of the existing oil-fired boilers with a new coal-fired boiler. 3. Replacing both of the existing boilers with new coal-fired boilers. Based on the findings of the Avondale El Paso and San Clemente tanker conversion schemes, the technical and economic factors of each of these options are discussed and evaluated as a means of achieving substantial fuel cost savings.
