THE DEVELOPMENT OF THRUSTERS FOR SHIP MANOEUVRING AND DYNAMIC POSITIONING
The historical development of thrusters is treated briefly and current thruster types and their applications are reviewed. The mechanical design of thrusters is discussed and hydrodynamic performance based on model testing is evaluated using the Bendeman merit coefficient. The influence of vessel directional stability when manoeuvring at speed with L-thrusters has been investigated. Rotatable thrusters have been studied in model as well as in full scale. Forces, moments and stresses recorded in full scale are on the same level as those measured on the model. A survey on the application of thrusters both for merchant ships and the special types of vessels in the offshore field concludes the paper.
