SPLIT DREDGERS AND BARGES - MAIN ASPECTS OF THEIR STRUCTURAL STRENGTH

This is the text of a paper presented at Marintec China '81 and also published in Schip en Werf. No. 6 March 1982. It describes the basis of a somewhat original concept whereby spoil, carried in the well of a hopper barge/dredger, is discharged by opening the hull and partially rotating the two halves about a longitudinal axis, the halves remaining connected by hinges and hydraulic cylinders. The main problems to be considered for this mode of operation are <1> the longitudinal strength of the ship, <2> the power of the cylinders, <3> the behaviour of deck hinges, <4> the behaviour of deck-house hinges <deck houses remain upright during opening and closing of the well>, and <5> structural details and continuity of main structural elements. The article describes the method used to check the longitudinal strength, and a description of the dynamic analysis <needed for the calculation of the dynamic reaction in the hinges and cylinders> is given. The determination of static components is presented together with approximate formulae. In conclusion, reference is made to steering, propulsion arrangements and stability characteristics.
