OIL FLOW TEST ON MAYBACH C34V LOCOMOTIVE FINAL DRIVE UNIT (AXLE GEAR DRIVE)

Spalling problems of the bevel gears in the Maybach C34V axle gear final drive unit on the Krauss-Maffei diesel hydraulic locomotives involved an intensive study of the oil flows to the various bearings in the final drive. Test results were shown in chart form for the various bearing locations. Conclusions from these tests indicated that certain modifications should be considered to obtain better oil flow and distribution to the main bearing points in the drive unit as follows: 1. Increase the oil pump capacity, particularly at the low speeds. 2. Increase the relief valve spring pressure to retard opening of the valve at the low speeds. 3. Add a line to the input shaft bearings for better distribution of oil flow. 4. Increase all jet sizes in the oil lines to reduce the possibility of their being plugged with debris. The above modifications were made on this final drive unit in the conduct of these tests and were found to increase the oil flow at all bearings, with the most significant increase at the double pinion and input shaft bearings.
