STEEL'S NEW COAT WEARS WELL
A new technique known as fricsurfing has been developed to provide protection against wear and corrosion. It is an automatic, computer- controlled method for applying layers of wear-resistant or corrosion-resistant metals to components by friction welding, and can be used for placing coatings of corrosion-proof steels such as stainless steel, Monel or Inconel onto almost any other metal base or for placing coatings of hard-wearing high-carbon or high-chrome tool steels, including Stellite, onto plain mild steel plates or shafts, It is superior to metal spraying or arc welding in that it does not require skilled labour, and that it is a one-step operation needing little preparation or finishing, while it is also metallurgically superior since the coating material does not melt but is bonded to the component by hot forging, thus eliminating problems of porosity, slag inclusions, and the dilution of the coating metal.
