ANALYSES OF FATIGUE TEST DATA OF OFFSHORE TUBULAR JOINTS

Published data on fatigue tests on tubular joints and fundamental joints <cruciform joints, butt-welded plates, etc.> for offshore structures are reviewed. Regression analysis of the results is undertaken to determine the effects of various factors on the fatigue strength of these types of joint. Among the factors considered are plate thickness, material, load ratio, random loading, corrosive environments, grinding, TIG dressing, etc. Good correlation was found between the effects of each of these factors on the fatigue strength of tubular and fundamental joints. Current fatigue design curves are compared with the collected data and it is confirmed that these curves provide an ample measure of safety.
