TYPE 22

The first Type 22 frigate, HMS Broadsword, was completed in 1979 and was followed by other Batch 1' frigates of this type <see Abstract No. 58,817, Jan. 1983>. The first Type 22 Batch II vessel, HMS Boxer, was completed in Jan. 1984 and is engaged in extensive trials; she is larger than Broadsword and has a full-load tonnage of 4600 <about 600 t greater> and an overall length of 471 ft as compared with 430 ft; five more Batch 11 vessels are to be built, and Batch III will follow in due course. The article, which includes general-arrangement drawings of Batch 1 and Batch II frigates, discusses the design of Boxer with particular reference to her operational equipment <which includes the new Ferranti CACS -- Computer Assisted Command System> and internal arrangements, and includes some information on her performance and some discussion on personnel matters.
