ROVS IN DIVER SUPPORT ROLES. MILITARY APPLICATIONS

ROVs have now played a key role for several years in offshore, energy resource related, diving operations. In the military sector such a working relationship does not yet exist but the scope for such interaction appears to be even greater. In this paper the findings of an initial trial that was set up as part of a contract with the Ministry of Defence to investigate the widest implications of ROVs in a diver support mode in military operations are reported. This trial, limited to observational and guidance tasks, took place in Loch Ness and involved a large team of Royal Naval mixed gas divers, a Hydroproducts RCV 225 and an Ametek Scorpi. The possible roles for the larger and more powerful ROVs are also discussed. In particular, their use as a navigation aid, illumination source, power and heating source and tooling system package are considered. <CMO>.
